The challenges of caring for relatives in Switzerland

Written by Sabrina Villing | 16.07.2024

Caring for relatives is an important task in Switzerland that poses major challenges for many people. But how much time do they actually invest in this responsible task and what measures are there to support them?

Time commitment

The amount of time required varies enormously depending on the intensity of care and the individual needs of the person being cared for. It should be noted that a wide range of tasks are taken on by family carers. 54% of family carers state that they are often available for emotional support and social support (being there). An activity that is not measured with a stopwatch, but is carried out with the heart. Studies show that a significant proportion of family carers invest a remarkable amount of time: 66% spend up to 10 hours per week, 20% invest an impressive 10 to 20 hours. In addition, up to 10% of family carers even spend 21 to 30 hours or more a week, including round-the-clock care. These figures emphasise the enormous commitment and dedication that many relatives devote to caring for their loved ones.

Burdens on health and finances

Around 30% of family carers rate their health as moderate to very poor, especially older family carers. 63% of all carers experience a personal crisis. 16% of family carers report financial difficulties. Those who have had to reduce their employment or work part-time are particularly affected. Around 20% reduce their working hours to care for their loved ones.

Support measures

Family carers use various measures and support services to manage their tasks and find relief. The majority of family carers receive support from family members. This help often comes in the form of practical and emotional support. Talking about the current situation can provide enormous relief. The involvement of professionals in the form of counselling, respite care or Spitex can be a great support for the whole family. Looking at the situation from a different perspective can reveal further options and offers of support. For most family carers, building up a solid network of helpers is an important part of achieving a good balance.

For family carers in a work & care situation, flexible working hours, home office options and special leave days can be a great support. Some companies already offer these options. Recognising the need for relief at an early stage is essential in order to maintain balance, which can be difficult for the person concerned to recognise. For this reason, it is important to raise awareness in companies and among the general public on the issue of caring for relatives and the double burden that comes with it.
